The 27-year-old singer was initially pulled over early Thursday morning around 2.15am on an L.A. freeway by California Highway Patrol officers for speeding and having potentially illegal tinted windows, TMZ reports.
When the police rolled up to the star's 2013 BMW X6, they discovered he allegedly 'smelled of alcohol,' the website said.
They performed several field sobriety tests, which the singer allegedly failed and also administered a breathalyser test.
Miguel, real name Miguel Jontel Pimentel, is reported by the website to have blown a .10 and a .11which is more than the .08 legal limit in California.
Miguel was then arrested on a DUI charge and taken to a nearby police station, where he was released a couple of hours later after posting $5,000 bail.
He is scheduled for a September court date and has so far not commented on the incident.
Miguel won rave reviews for his 2012 album Kaleidoscope Dream, which featured Grammy-winning hit song Adorn - also the singer's highest-charting song to date.
But he most recently received press for a humorous blunder at the Billboard Music Awards on May 19, in which he landed on two women while attempting to leap across the stage.
